Description
A Girl Caressing a Child is the name of a group sculpture by the Irish sculptor James Heffernan (1785-1847). The work, depicting a young woman tending to a young boy, could be read as a warning on young motherhood. The girl is not given the status of mother, as such, which may give a darker narrative to a parting embrace.
It is closely related to another of the artist's group sculptures, The Distressed Mother, which is also available to download here.
