Its role was to carry the water which was sprinkled over the bride in the ceremony. Red figure painting was an invention of the Athenians in the sixth-century BC. South Italian Greek colonies, including Apulia, continued red-figure vase production after its decline in Athens. There are painted scenes on either side of the object. On one, a woman seated on a rock cradles a dish and on the other, a winged Eros, god of love, clutches a mirror in his right hand. Both figures have rounded bodies, necklaces, bracelets and anklets.
