The emperor Antoninus Pius is portrayed in larger-than-life dimensions. The sculpture is a replica of a portrait type known as the "Formia type", created at the moment when Antoninus Pius assumed the title of emperor (AD 138). Th ebody is a reworking of the Diomedes CUma-Munich statue type, traceable to a Greek original carved around 440-430 BC, possibly by the Athenian sculpture Kresilas or an artist in his circle, Around AD 140.
