This mask was probably cast in the Maya lowlands from very pure imported copper since no local sources are known. The prominent nose and tongue are attributes of the Maya merchant gods. The piece may have been made by the Postclassic Chontal Maya of the Yucatan peninsula. As sea-going merchants they traded copper, textiles, cacao, salt and obsidian.
