Description
(The Genius of Death crying over the urn; study version witht the Genius of Death crying over the urn, and a kneeling maiden).
The two bas-reliefs are the study and definitive model for the elegant sepulchre of architect Louis de Cambray-Digny who died in 1843, and is one of the numerous high commissions that Lorenzo Bartolini executed in the 1840s for the church of Santa Croce. The compositional elegance of the plaster statues combines with the freshness of the shaping of the crown of flowers, created with the simple and rapid pressure of the sculptor's fingers.
