Description
This statue belongs to a series of Roman marble copies going back to a Greek statue of Aphrodite from 3rd century BC. Some better preserved Roman versions show that Venus, the goddess of love, beauty and prosperity, leaned on a pillar with a dolphin, which points to her being born in the sea.
