This MasterSpool Design is inspired by Richard Horne's masterspool idea to avoid waste and reduce shipping weight. My intention was to reduce the amount of filament and printing time, needed to build this spool. With this in mind I changed the threated locking mechanism to sort of a bayonet catch. I ended up with this lightweight but rigid "Universalspool Twist and Lock".
Every spool consists of 3 parts
- the hub
- two side parts (same file printed 2 times)
futhermore you will need an opening tool. One tool should serve for all your spools
Depending on the manufacturer you will need a certain hub size. Choose the parts you need from the table below.
In order to cover the large bandwidth of different coils on the market, I had to develop 2 types:
- Type-s is for filament coils with small inner diameter, in a range from 76mm to 92mm
- Type-l is intended coils with large inner diameter (98mm to 130mm)
All parts of the same type are compatible with each other.

To attach labeling stickers use the "ClipOn" (only works with side parts labeled as l-side-197-xx)
How to read hub labelling: t - hub - i - w
- t (Type) all parts of the same type are interchangeable with each other. There are 2 different types: s (small) and l (large)
- w (width of the refill coil)
- i (refill coil inner diameter)

how to read side part labelling: t - side - o - i
- t (Type) you need the same type as choosen for the hub
- i (side part inner hole diameter should match the mounting options of your printer)
- o (max. outer diameter)
Available side parts:
s-type
- s-side-180-50: side part, 180mm outer diameter for smaller print beds
- s-side-197-50: side part, with 197mm outer diameter
l-type
- l-side-197-70: side part with big center hole 70mm to save printing time an material
- l-side-197-70RS: providing a wider running surface for Spoolholders with bearings
- l-side-197-52: standard center hole of 52mm
- l-side-170-70: 170mm outer diameter for smaller printbeds
- l-side-170-52: 170mm outer diameter, standard inner diameter
