I have always liked the basic building blocks. I enjoy this because of how you have to build considering gravity and see how far you could push it. Inevitably you would push it too far and knock it down, clearing the pallet. My goal for these was to preserve simplicity and balance while enabling building horizontally.
The shapes are basic and simply interlock to allow you to build horizontally. However, to preserve the challenge that gravity presents, I significantly reduced the locking part of inter-locking. This effectively created a Jenga-like setup, where careful block placement and balance are significant. The hard PLA plastic and hard floor created a similar effect as when a Jenga tower falls, with the satisfying rumble and the sight of the pieces falling and scattering across the ground.
Then, there is the “Anchor” piece, which is made of 7 parts (6 are the same) allowing mounting these blocks to tripods and other items. Using super glue, attach a 1⁄4 inch nut at the base. This allows you to attach it to any tripod or a 1⁄4 inch bolt of any length that is held upright, giving you a nice, firm starting-off point. All you have to do is insert the 6 smaller pieces so the circular side points out and are on the bottom of the slits. Glue is optional but suggested.
Something nice about this is you don’t even need much inspiration to make something interesting. You are almost guaranteed something interesting as long as you place one piece on another.
Some ideas:
- Build as far out as you can go.
- Build as far down as you can.
- Build as compactly as you can.
- Try to lay a line perpendicular to the main line.
- Build off of two of the connections to the anchor and try to connect them.
- See how many blocks you can rest on top of other blocks.
- See how large you can get the structure without picking up any of the pieces that fall.
