Here Franz West gives his pedestals a dual use. On one hand they serve to support his sculptures (scanned, base not scanned); on the other hand, they become bookshelves. This work was first presented in 1994 at the Dia Center for the Arts bookstore in New York, a public place, not a museum, corresponding to Franz West's vision of accessible art. A lover of psychoanalytic lyerature and philosophy, in the bookshelves below these sculptures the artist had arranged a selection of works by authors he admired, from Albert Camus to Jean-Paul Sartre, including Sigmund Freud and Ludwig Wittgenstein. An insatiable reader, he enjoyed distributing books to his friends and collaborators.
