9-wheel Kryptex
9-wheel Kryptex

This KRYPTEX is a longer variant of Hiob's 6-wheel cryptex. With a billion possible combinations as opposed to a million, it's a bit harder. Hence the unambiguously hard K instead of a C in the name.
Hiob's design is based on CloudJ's design, which is nicely demonstrated on YouTube. My design uses Hiob's "Phantom" numerals but remains entirely compatible with his alternative rings in case you prefer runes or whatever. In fact, my design differs only in the following ways:
- The sleeves are lengthened and their ribs extended to support three additional wheels.
- The ends and sleeves are printed separately to facilitate use of different materials.
- Integrated into each sleeve is a rim which aesthetically separates the ends from the ring stack.

Finishing Touches
I sanded the steel- and wood-infused parts a bit and brushed them with steel wool. This improved the appearance and lightened the color of non-recessed areas so that numerals and index marks stand out. I sanded the sides of the assembled wheels a little till they all turned easily.
Assembly
- Attach the inner sleeve to an end, ensuring that the index mark goes between the two ribs. Use cyanoacrylate and two pins to ensure a strong and well-aligned attachment.
- Attach the outer sleeve to the other end in the same manner, ensuring that the index mark goes between the two channels.
- Choose a nine-digit code. Align your chosen digit on each outer ring with the unlock icon on an inner ring and press each ring pair together.
- Slide each complete ring onto the outer sleeve.
- Align all digits of your code with the index mark.
- Place the kryptex on a flat surface with the code facing skyward to ensure good alignment of the rings' gates with the outer sleeve's channels.
- Slide the inner sleeve into the outer sleeve.
