Description
Anotnio D'Este's marble self-portrait was donated by the artist's son in 1839 to the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice. The sculptor is famous for his friendship with Antonio Canova, of whom he wrote a biography published in 1864. He produced many statues, reliefs and portrait busts. This piece of work bears witness to the gradual shift from naturalism to a more idealising approach. The artist has dwelled particularly on the hair and long sideburns, framing the serene face. The head is slightly turned, with the eyes looking upwards, generating a motion that contrasts with the otherwise frontal presentation.
