Description
The sitter was related by marriage to Henry Blundell of Ince, in whose family collection the bust descended. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1803. Nollekens achieves a vivid sense of likeness through the beautiful modelling of the face and the crisply observed details such as his thick eyebrows and curling locks; but there is also an elevated, classical air thanks to the generalised toga-like drapery over his shoulders.
