Cupid, the winged god of love, here blows on the torch held by Hymne, the god of marriage, perhaps signifying the igniting of his passion. This classical subject was typical of Rennie's work. He studied under Bertel Thorvaldsen in Rome in the 1820s, and was much influenced by the Danish sculptor's style, which echoes the sculpture of ancient Greece. It is sculpted out of marble and was signed about 1831.
