Description
This herm falls within the type that contrasts a bearded head of Dionysus a beardless head of a satyr, a technique very common in the Roman world. The meaning of these herms was perhaps apotropaic (- to help remove and protect against evil influences), but this was later lost and the herm was reduced to a decorative or ornamental purpose.
