Description
This head was shown in 1931 at the first major international exhibition of Byzantine art in Paris. Volbach, a German art historian, belonged to the scientific advisory board and was a close friend of the exhibition secretary Georges Duithuit. In the following year, together with Georges Salles, they gave out a magnificent volume of 100 masterpieces of Byzantine art, including this one. The piece was considered a portrait of an emperor, but it is now agreed that the head belonged to a tomb statue, which stood in a niche. The bald head indicates that the portrayed was a priest.
