Acquired before 1891
Marble, Roman, after an original from ca. 460/450 BC
Polykleitos created numerous bronze statues depicting gods and athletes. This head goes back to a type, which presumably portrayed an athlete holding a discus in his left hand. The shape of the head so typical of Polykleitos' work, most notably the finely chiselled curly hairstyle, corresponds with the head of the Spear-Bearer close to it.
