Description
Thorvaldsen and the Norwegian landscape painter J.C. Dahl (1788-1857) were good friends, and the sculptor considered Dahl to be one of the best painters in his time. Dahl graduated from the Academy of Arts in Copenhagen 1811-1818, and was employed as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden in 1824.
In 1821, during Dahl's second stay in Rome, Thorvaldsen modeled this portrait bust. The bust, which was once a gift from Thorvaldsen, was only finished in marble around 1827.
