Description
This sculpture by Corneille Van Cleve (1645-1732) is entitled "La Loire et Le Loiret". There are many sculptures in France with representations of important rivers and this work celebrates two of France's the Loire and the Loiret. The work depicts a man (the Loiret) and a woman (the Loire) sitting down with the woman's back to the man's side, but she faces forward. The woman holds a jug which is turned over and spilling water. The bearded man is reading a scroll to his left. A child (or cherub) is set in front of the woman. Another child holds two fish behind the male figure.
