Marathon/Attica (Greece), acquired in 1848
Marble, around 470 BC
The marble mask was long regarded as an early image of Dionysus without offering a satisfying explanation for the dowel holes on the sides of the forehead. If one adds here the bull's ears and horns, the typical bull's mask of the river god Achelous can be reconstructed.
