Description
The model was ordered by Alexandrine Blechamp, second wife of Lucien Bonaparte (1775-1840). His death is portrayed in the bas-relief as that of a righteous man or a "Christian philosopher". The prince blesses his kneeling wife flanked by allegorical figures: Opinion, daughter of Reason, who crowns Lucien, and for which Pampaloni did not have iconographical references, Faith, Abundance, and Ambition sitting in the act of recoiling. The outline of the bas-relief seems to derive from that of Canova in the Lamentation over Socrates.
