Description
Although this figure looks naturalistic to Western eyes, it is not a life-like portrayal. The queen's face follows an idealized type common for images of the Virgin in Paris around 1300, as does her posture, with a building taking the place of the Christ Child. Jeanne de Navarre would have been identified by the heraldry and inscriptions in the architecture in which the figure originally stood.
