rhombus panel based on rhombic dodecahedron. this panel will create a rhombic dodecahedron when 12 are put together. also combine them with other polygons to create various geometries!
The rhombic dodecahedron will function as a node for IVM (Isotropic Vector Matrix). IVM is a fully triangulate matrix so it creates a very strong frame. The dowel joint panel will allow you to make IVM. hopefully the snaps will be strong enough for bigger constructions.
This system uses 7/8" wood dowel that I purchased from home depot. I cut mine to 1 cubit (20.62" or 20 and 5/8"). You can cut struts to whatever length you like, but if you are making IVM then by definition all struts will be the same length unless you also do a fractal scale. joints are oversized to account for all the variations in the dowel diameters so don't be worried if some fit looser than others, once screwed it should feel good. Or you could adjust your flow rate, or shim it up with some paper when needed. I use a 1" screw cause its easier to screw into the wood at that length.
I have posted some pics of models I created in the past for modular furniture systems using the IVM to give you an idea of what can be built with this geometry but explore other ones too! I will post pics of this particular system when I have printed enough joints! but I want ya'll to be able to get started using the joint.
Included is a version where dowel can slide through joint. hole is larger to accomadate dowel diameter variations. Can be used as pivot (pulley, wheel, gear, lever...etc).
shoutout to @Brodie PVC pipe connector panel. Got me very excited to explore these joints. I would like to create parametric joints for all the polygons. Maybe @Brodie or someone else who does parametric design can take that on?
