Description
It is quite common to find such relief sculptures on Roman sarcophaguses. Their purpose is either to represent the deceased during his life, or to represent what his after life may resemble. Here, it would seem to be the second option, as the couple is represented next to allegorical figures of countries or geographic areas such as Africa.
