Description
This sandstone stele, known as a Sati (or Suttee) stone, serves as a memorial to Indian widows and can be found all over India. It was acquired by Charles Stuart at Bhilsa and later in the Indian Museum, from where it was passed to the British Museum.
'Sati' is an obsolete funeral custom where a widow immolates herself (Anumarana) on her husband's pyre or takes her own life in another fashion shortly after her husband's death.
