This is a side-mounted spool holder with bearings for the Ender 3 line of printers. I created this to solve a few problems inherent in the design of the top-mounted spool holder. The first issue that this was designed to correct is the tendency for the filament to erode the arm on the extruder caused by the extreme approach angle the filament is fed from. I have relocated the holder to a lower side-mounted position allowing the filament to be fed in a straight path to the extruder. The side mount bracket also slides to provide a better filament changing experience for the user This design also incorporates 3d printed bearings (BBs required) to reduce the stress on the extruder motor and to facilitate smoother filament feeding and thus improving print quality. Additionally, I have also included tapered filament cones to enable different size spools to be utilized with this setup. Another optional feature of this system is an included thing created by Adriano Alfaro to prevent filament interference with the z screw. Print settings: I have printed all parts with a 2mm wall thickness and 10% infill. The only part that requires supports is the shaft, I used cura tree supports for this and it turned out great. Supports are optional for the cones but recommended ( I didn't use them). No other items require supports if oriented properly.
Post-Printing
Step 2 Bearing Assembly
1. Remove the print from the printer 2. Locate the bigger outer race 3. Insert smaller inner race into the bigger outer race ensuring that the BB port notches are both aligned and facing up 4. Insert .177 inch steel BBs into bearing port until raceway is full (Don't force) 5. Check to ensure bearing spins freely 6. Repeat sub-steps 1-5 on the second bearing
Step 3 Assembly
1. Insert 1 bearing onto shaft ensure its seating on shoulder 2. Place tapered cone with tapered side facing inward onto the bearing 3. Place spool onto the shaft 4. Place the second tapered cone onto shaft with the tapered edge facing spool 5. Place second bearing into the cone 6. Insert bushing, with shoulder facing out, into bearing 7. Thread nut onto shaft, tighten until cones are firmly seated into spool. 8. Ensure spool spins freely on shaft, if not loosen the nut until desired resistance is obtained
Final step
1. Remove top mounted spool mount 2. Strip down spool holder to bare components 3. Attach spool side mount bracket to stock mount with stock hardware 4. Remove extrusion cap on lower left extrusion and slide side mount bracket into grooves ensuring alignment with the extruder. (It is designed to slide to help with filament changes) 5. Replace extrusion end cap 6. insert new spool holder shaft into stock mount 7. Place stock twist locking nut onto shaft and tighten
Optional Filament guide
1. Slide Filament guide onto extruder mount where z rod intercepts. 2. Feed filament through notch in the guide and then feed into the extruder
