The knocking grew louder. A heavy, incessant pounding on the door.
Like patience had finally worn out.
Still not a word had been uttered, no requests had been made.
But Sinyn knew what was on the other side of that door. Why she had barred the door with thick wooden boards, sealed the metal bars on the windows and placed woven Strands on those entrances.
She looked over to the man in the corner huddling under a blanket. Eyes big with fear, hair matted with sweat.
The man had unwittingly invited doom when he gambled on snail races.
Just a small bet. An unfavorable bet, sure.
A bet no one is supposed to win, absolutely.
But a bet that would yield a hundred times the stake.
And predictably he lost, could not pay the little stake and the Gamble Gaunt had come to collect.
If the Gaunt somehow managed to get in, the man would not only lose his house and his life; he would lose his very soul.
It would be siphoned out, stored and used for some nefarious purpose. Until either the debt was considered paid or the soul was broken and useless.
This was of course highly illegal and the reason she had come here. Without her guild she would not be able to fight off the Gaunt and her hope lay in stalling for time.
The knocking stopped abruptly.
