Description
Statues of dogs were part of the sculptural decoration of villas. In ancient art, dogs were depicted preferably in hunting scenes and as companion animals of deities of the forest and the hunt (Pan, Pirapus, Apollo). The Roman upper class kept them as guard dogs for their houses as well as for hunting.
