Description
This statue of Asclepius is a Roman copy of a bronze original created in the 4th Century BC, attributed to the sculptor Timotheos; a version of this sculpture can be found at The Louvre Ma 639.
Asclepius was the god of medicine. He was also the patron god, and reputed ancestor, of the Asklepiades (Asclepiades), the ancient guild of doctors. Asklepios was the son of Apollon and the Trikkaian (Triccaean) princess Koronis (Coronis).
From the Collezione Cernazai (Gia Grimani), acquired in 1900.
