Samos (Greece), sanctuary of Hera
Acquired in 1914
Marble, around 630 BC
Perirrhanteria served as basins for cultic rituals in Greek sanctuaries. The Berlin specimen from the Heraion of Samos is the earliest of its kind and the oldest stone sculpture in the Collection of Classical Antiquities. The female supporting figures and in particular the lions are strongly influenced by Near Eastern models.
