×The cutting board for the amazing one handers!!!!
I am submitting this on behalf of my daughter. She is under 16 and she is full of ideas. Maya has been wanting to put her projects through but has not had the chance because we don't have access to a 3D printer. She was excited to hear about this competition and spent a lot of time on this project since it has emotional value for her as well. She was frustrated to see that she can not submit this herself. The rest is all her's.
I’m Maya a 12 year old from Turkey with a mild cerebral palsy, that will only push me forward. Because of the cerebral palsy affecting the whole right side I used to be dependent on my parents for easy tasks like cutting an apple or tying my shoelaces. I managed to overcome most of my challenges and I want to help people do easy tasks without depending on other people by sharing my own experience.
The problem I am trying to solve is making people that can use only one hand’s life easier. This project and hopefully more projects that I make are going to be to help people of any age that can only use one hand. I do not think that it is fair that everything we use is made for people that use two hands and even though people are working on it, one-handed tools are not very common, popular or easy to reach. My goal is to be able to make my projects reachable wherever the person is and to raise awareness.
I might have been able to adjust my life to make using one hand easier. Okay yeah, I have solved most of my life struggles but what about the people out there! And thus I decided to share my experiences, solutions, and knowledge about this topic
with others facing it.
My device will help people cut anything with one hand only. This device will not slide or slip, it will be adjustable, it will be functional and it will hopefully be very helpful. Cutting an apple for most people is the easiest task of the day but for others, it is the hardest. Well not anymore. First of all, if you can only use one hand you are stuck with the only option available using a cutting board. Now the challenge becomes getting it to steady. After you overcome that you have to have the courage to cut it -without chopping off your fingers. After that task, you can now enjoy your hard earned apple. This took me about a year to finally cut an apple by myself. During which I thought of ways to make this easier.
The first thing I worked on was getting the device to steady which I managed by making it not slide or slip by putting silicone under the cutting board. After that, I worked on getting the food that the person will cut to steady by putting things like stoppers(the front and back walls in the third drawing. Also labeled as the letter C) on both ends to grasp keep the thing steady. After I was done with that I made it adjustable(on the base in the
third drawing. Also labeled as the letter D) for any type of food that needs cutting. The adjustable wall is the letter B. The fixed wall is the letter A in the third and final drawing.
