This is an ancient marble bust depicting Dionysus, the god of the grape harvest, winemaking and wine, of fertility, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, and theatre in ancient Greek religion and myth.
He is called ‘Farnese’ after the Farnese collection to which he belonged — one of the most important antiquities collections in Rome. This collection has moved and today is housed in Naples
