Rangers are a very skilled archtype with a diverse range of talents. Hunting, tracking, scouting, archery, swordfighting, the list goes on. Some rangers choose animal companions whilst others will rely soley on themselves, thats not to say they're reclusive, far from it. Rangers are a solid pillar of any adventuring group, weather it be for melee or ranged combat and in the instance of Tortles Rangers, they're also a bit tanky and great at fishing :)
