I actually designed this one a while ago, back before I went professional and bought my Zortrax M200, and I was never 100% happy with it. So I decided now I know a little more and had a printer capable of doing it justice, it was time to revisit it and do a proper job.
This is a replica of the shortsword carried by the Japanese Samurai, known as the Wakizashi. It was generally carried in the side-scabbard next to the longsword (the Katana, which most people know as the 'Samurai sword') and was used either in close-quarters combat or for when the Samurai needed to fight with two swords at once. It was also used by assassins like the Ninja, generally in this case carried with a second Wakizashi for the same reasons.
This version of the Wakizashi is made in a lot more parts than the previous effort; the blade is still made in six pieces (three left, three right, all of which fit together to make the whole) but the handle is now made in many sections rather than just being one solid piece. To make it a lot stronger I've cut channels into the core into which you can insert strengthening rods (or I just use lollysticks). These channels go right up into the crossguard which strengthen it more. It's still not going to survive if you actually try to spar with it, and since it's only a 3D printed model you really shouldn't be sparring with it anyway... There's also two channels which run the length of the blade into which you can insert strengthening rods (I use garden stakes but if you have better ideas please let me know what they are so I can try them!). You will still see the joins on the blade but you can fill them with filler or resin and then spray it with chrome paint to give the impression of a one-piece blade.
I have to stress that point; THIS IS NOT A FUNCTIONAL WEAPON. It's a replica to be used for cosplay or ornamental purposes and I accept NO responsibility if it's used for other reasons. I'm still debating whether to offer it for sale in my Etsy store but if you'd like me to print one for you please message me and we'll sort something out.
