A sturdy Scale Wheel Chock Set for a medium size model aircraft, with base plate designed to accept double sided Velcro straps to stabilize and anchor the aircraft’s wheels during transportation and at the field. When the hooks of the Velcro straps face outward, the bases will grip tightly onto most carpeting commonly found in modern vehicles.
The components can all be easily 3D printed, without any support, on a modern inexpensive 3D Printer. They can be printed with a variety of materials, including PLA, PETG, ABS and other type of printable materials.
PLA works very well for this application. It is easy to print. The wheel chocks parts should be durable, easy to maintain, and last for a long time. However, they should not be stored or kept at high temperature, exceeding ~55 C (~ 130 F).
Should the wheel chocks components be left in a high temperature environment, such as a parked car in the summer, I strongly recommend using another heat tolerant material, such as PETG or ABS to prevent warping.
Recommended print settings with a .4 mm nozzle
- Layer Hight: .150 ~.160 mm, depending on motors and gearing
- 3 perimeters or shells (1.2 ~ 1.5 mm)
- 8 bottom layers (1.2 ~ 1.3 mm)
- 8 top layers (1.2 ~ 1.3 mm)
- Infill 15%~20%, depending on infill type
Additional Items needed for Assembly
2 X 30 cm (~ 12 inch) of small diameter rope; i.e.: 5mm (3/16”)
2 X 30 cm (~ 12 inch) of double-sided Velcro strap approximately ~ 20mm (3/4”) width
Assembly Instructions
Chocks
Use approximately 30 cm (12 inch) of small diameter rope, i.e.: 5mm (3/16"), that fits through the chock’s central hole, to link two chocks together. Tie a knot of sufficient size on each end of the assembly to prevent the rope from sliding back through the holes. Simple figure 8 knots on each end works well for me.
Base
Use approximately 30 cm (12 inch) of double sided Velcro strap per chock base, that fits through one of the slots in the base, to form a loop that goes through the base, wraps around the bottom and returns to the top of the base through the other slot, to wrap around the wheel of the model aircraft.
Note that the hooks of the Velcro straps should face outward of the loop, to grip onto the typical carpeting found in most passenger cars.
