Description
Attic pottery relief ware increased in production in the 4th century BC. The terracotta reliefs were mould-made and then applied to the leather-hard, red figured vase before firing. The reliefs were coloured and sometimes gilded, perhaps to emulate metal vessels. This oil flask (lekythos) shows Dionysos and Ariadne, accompanied by maenads.
