In 24th December 1914 war was still growing and spreading. Humanity never seen before a war like that.
In trenches, a soldier spend his Christmas far from home for the first time in his life. His name was forgothen by the history, the side he fight for is irrelevant for the messege of the story. But it is something special abouth this soldier and a lot of people like him that where there during the war.
Yes, there were moments of peace on the battlefield, there were armistices before for vary reasons. And yes, no all the troops participated in this one. But those who got involved…They created a new story with new kind of heroes.
The Christmas Truce is remembered as an armistice more between Germans and British forces even if some sources say that this happened in other places, too. The brave soldier and his fellow comrades crossed the no man’s land on night of 24th December 1914 to meet with their supposed enemy without having a guarantee that they woud not be killed. They get agreed with them to stop the war for the holiday. They buried together their comrades who died on the battlefield. During this moment of pece, they began to talking to each other, to sang carols together and they share gifts like chocolete and cigarettes (like the one on the ground that mix with the bricks). They even exchanged hats and they wished each other ,,Merry Christmas!’’ or ,,Frohliche Weichnachten!’’ (in german). They put small Christmas trees near the trenches and some people say that they played football, too.
In some sectors this truce lasted until the New Year’s Eve. And the generals restarted the war with artillery and machine guns in sectors where the truce did not end.
This truce was unique in history and I think this event represent this holiday. People that do not know each other put their differences aside, risk their lives to cross the no man’s land and gather togheter on a special day. Heroes like them that remind as what we celebrate on Christmas: kindness, humanity, family.
The figurine is 10 cm high and is painted with acrylics. Although the original source is from WW2, the figurine was painted to be associated with an ordinary soldier from WW1, without bearing the insignia of one of the factions involved in the war. The tank cannon was modified using plasticine to look more like one of WW1 and the ball was made of plasticine as well. I also removed the coat of arms with the eagle on the top of flag on the floor in order not to leave room for interpretations.
