The celebration of sport has always been a key theme in sculpture. Successful Greek and Roman athletes would often have sculptures made of them and many artists used sportsmen and women as the templates for their depictions of the idealised human form. Even in Classical Maya (1,400 BC) sports were played, including their infamous Mesoamerican ballgame which would result in the decapitation of the losing team. This collection gives an overview of how sport has become a huge influence in art, ranging from 1,500BC to contemporary times.
