Here is a quick tutorial to paint the pandas from my campaign Land of Pandas.

Painting black and whites can be intimidating for unseasoned miniature painters and results may look dull if you do apply whites straigth from the pot on a black undercoat. As there are quite a few pandas in this campaign and some backers asked for tips on how I paint mine, I thought it would be worthwhile to share my painting process for thos bad boys.

Here are the paints I use in this tutorial, remember to always thin your paints with water (don't apply them straight from the pot, it will be ugly and you will lose precious details):

1. Prime your miniature.

First you want to prime your miniature for the paint to adhere. I use a

grey primer for this, which I apply in a thin layer with a brush. If you have an airbrush you may want to apply them with it. Grey primer is a good starting point for building the black colors and the whites.

You may also prefer to spray can them, in that case Grey Sir from Games Workshop is a decent choice.

2. Basecoat

Here is the base coat, remember to thin you paints. You may prepare them on a wet palette (except metals) so you can do them in bulk.

Abadon black for the black parts.
The Fang for the white parts.
Gorthor Brown for clothes and accessories or another color if you prefer.
Runefang Steel for metals.

Once applied, you model should look like this:

3. First highlights

I apply the first highlights roughly, on the large parts.

Administratum grey for the black parts.
Ulthuan grey for the white parts.
Ushabati bone for the brown parts (e.g. accessories).

You may want to dry brush at this step, for the black and accessories.

I apply the grey no the with parts with a brush (thin your paints 👌)

Your model should look like this at this step:

4. Shader

That is the magic part: I apply generously a nulnoil shader over the whole model. Don't dilute the shader, you can apply it straight from the pot (exceptionally).

There is not much to do here, I just avoid the large recesses of nulnoil with my brush (taking the large drops out). I also gently remove some of the nulnoil on white part with a brush, this is not mandatory but helps getting cleaner whites at the end of the process.

5. Highlights

Here is the final part, if you are happy with tabletop ready miniatures, one step is enough; otherwise you may want to repeat the this highlight process multiple time.

Administratum grey for the black parts.
Ulthuan grey for the white parts.
Ushabati bone for the brown parts.

You may dry brush with Ulthuan Grey on the metalic parts to add some light.

This is also the step where you add the final details, e.g. black eyes, black ears to really give them a panda look ! The head is the most important part when you look at a miniature, so mind the details there !
