A 3D printable robust and durable Knock Box, for knocking an espresso puck from the portafilter after coffee extraction.
The parts can be easily 3D printed, without any support, on a modern inexpensive 3D Printer. They are optimized for a 0.6 mm nozzle but can be printed with other nozzle sizes, including a 0.4 mm nozzle. They can be printed with a variety of materials, including PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, TPU and many other types of printable materials.
PETG and TPU works very well for this application. Both materials are easy to print. The object should be durable, easy to maintain, and last for a long time.
PLA may work as well as long as the parts will not be used, stored or kept at in a high temperature environment, exceeding ~55 C (~ 130 F).
I designed this object shortly after getting a new espresso machine for Christmas and I have been refining it since. The current version has been used multiple times every day, for more than two months.
Recommended print settings with a .6 mm nozzle
Knock Box in vase mode
Note: I had good luck with PETG in vase mode for the box
- Adjust extrusion width to 1.0 ~ 1.2 mm in your slicer
- Layer Height: .25 mm
- 1 perimeter or shell (1.0 ~ 1.2 mm)
- 10 bottom layers (2.5 mm)
- 0 top layer
* No infill needed when printing the box in vase mode
Knocker Insert
Note: TPU works well for the knocker.
- Extrusion width 0.67 ~ 0.70 mm
- Layer Height: .2 mm
- 3 perimeter or shell (2.0 ~ 2.1 mm)
- 10 bottom layers (2.0 mm)
- 10 top layers
- 15 ~ 20 % infill depending on infill type

Knock Box (PETG)
- Layer Height: .2 mm
- 3 perimeters or shells (1.35 ~ 1.5 mm)
- 10 bottom layers (2.0 mm)
- 10 top layers (2.0 mm)
- Infill 15%~20%, depending on infill type
Knocker Insert (TPU)
- Layer Height: .2 mm
- 5 perimeters or shells ( ~ 2.4 mm)
- 12 bottom layers (2.4 mm)
- 12 top layers (2.4 mm)
- Infill 15%~20%, depending on infill type
Assembly Instructions
1- Insert the Knocker in the box’s rails from above. Slide it all the way until it is flush with the bottom of the box.
The knocker legs are designed to carry the knocking load to the resting surface, so as not to stress the box during use.
