Fanorona - a traditional Malagasy board game.
It is played on a board divided by lines that mark 45
fields at intersections. The game requires a set of 44
pieces (22 black, 22 white). In the initial deployment,
the middle square is left empty.
Players make moves alternately, starting with the
white pawns. The move consists in moving a pawn to an
adjacent free square connected by a line. Capturing
pieces is done in two ways: by moving away or
approaching. Captures by leaving can be made when
opponents' pieces are on adjacent squares. The
player moves his pawn so that it is no longer an
adjacent pawn, thus capturing not only the pawn he
moved away from, but also all pawns behind him on the
departure line. Capturing by approach is done in a
similar way - all pieces on the line of approach of the
player's piece to the field adjacent to the opponent's
piece are captured.
If more than one group of pieces can be captured in
a single move, the player must choose which one to
capture. After capturing one or a group of pieces,
the player makes subsequent moves as long as he
captures the opponent's pieces. The exception is the
opening of the game - then, despite capturing pieces,
players make one move at a time. Beating is
mandatory.
