This sculpture depicts a partial female figure. In this work Rodin demonstrates his classical form, a return to antique sculptural prototypes.
Like in his other sister sculpture “The Walking man”, Rodin explores and studies a fragmented figure of the human body. The figure reveals a woman possibly standing on her knees even though not completely visible as the lower part of her body is not completely sculpted as well as the arms and head of the figure.
Rodin was known for not respecting the artistic convention stating that a sculpture was considered to be finished only if completed. He highly expressed his passion for uncomplete figures as well as assemblages of different pieces to give them “new life”.
