My take on the articulating print in place Dragon. Designed to maximize space usage on small resin printers and comes with a unique hollow version meant for transparent resin!
Unique design with a hollow in each link allowing for amazing possibilities with clear resin!
Works well on all resin printers from small to large. Also prints well on FDM!
Thoroughly tested to make sure the legs and tail have solid enough links yet retain a good range of natural motion if handled.
Fits on a 68*120mm build plate at 100% scale, but easy to scale up according to printer capabilities. Printed model at 100% scale is 25cm long with the legs and tail being considerably more sturdy than most other print in place dragon designs.
Includes a solid version, a version with hollow spikes in each link and a small jig that can be used as reference to help bend a syringe to proper curvature to clean the interior hollows and later inject paint if printing the clear Hollow version. I also added the "spikes" that are hollow as a separate model if you wish to adjust or modify them.
Designed and modelled by me in Blender
Comes in 2 versions: Hollow and Solid.
Both are easy to print:
No supports, print in place design.
When printing with resin, use proper rest times(up to 5 sec), especially with transparent resin as a lot of detail is right up to the build plate and will otherwise have edge artifacts along the bottom edge and lose detail.
Tests in images were printed on the original Phrozen Sonic Mini (1080p 5.5" mono screen) and a Phrozen Transform Mono (13.3" 4k mono screen) at 100% and 150% scale. Resin used was Siraya tech clear v2 and Phrozen aqua 4k .FDM was tested on a Prusa i3 with stock "speed" settings at 150% scale.
Be extra careful and pay extra attention when cleaning the hollow version of the print! To properly remove all resin from the interior hollow portion best practice is to use a syringe to inject IPA into each link to get best results in addition to regular wash and clean / ultrasonic cleaner. Repeat several times if needed!
Don't forget proper PPA: gloves mask and goggles are a must!
Settings I used:
For Phrozen Aqua 4k gray/green/blue resin in a Phrozen Sonic Mini:
I use 2.5s exposure, 15s bottom exposure, 3mm of lift and 40mm/min lift speeds. Rest times are useful but not mandatory for best quality with this resin as it's very thin / not viscous. I add -0.1mm of bottom tolerance compensation in Chitubox.
For Siraya tech clear v2 in a Phrozen Sonic Mini:
I use 3.5s exposure, 12s bottom exposure, 3mm of lift and 40mm/min lift speeds. For this resin to get optimal results ~4-5s rest times are 100% mandatory to get good detail along the bottom edge! I add -0.2mm of bottom tolerance compesation in Chitubox aswell. Also remember that this specific resin likes to be warm, 25c is the "minimum" temperature it's consistent at.
And for my bigger printer (13.3" Phrozen Transform Mono):
For Siraya Tech Clear v2 I used 5.5s exposure, 60s bottom exposure, 5mm of lift, 50mm/min lift speeds and ~5s of rest times.
Same settings work well for Phrozen water washable Rapid Black aswell
For Phrozen Aqua gray 4k I've used ~3.5s exposure, 55s bottom exposure, 5mm of lift, 50mm/min lift speeds and ~2s of rest times.
