Prusias ad Hypium (Turkey), theatre, acquired in 1931
Marble, 1st century BC
The idyllic depiction of satyr and nymph embedded in the landscape, with figures almost completely freed from the relief ground, is surrounded by the relief's edge like a frame which accentuates the decorative effect. From the late Hellenistic period onwards, such Dionysan decorative reliefs were displayed in theatre districts.
