This monument was made by the Russian sculptor Mikhail Belov, with the participation of A. Ananyev and V. Timinsky, architect V. Tsekhomsky, and designer E. Belova. It was installed at the entrance to the building of the Twelve Colleges on February 26, 2007. The idea of creating the monument to the University and the campaign for its installation belong to the Cultural Foundation "Famous University students of St. Petersburg State University".
The monument to "University" is an allegorical bronze figure of a flying winged Genius with a torch of knowledge and a laurel wreath (currently stolen or in restoration). According to ancient mythology, Genius is the patron of courageous, distinguished, advanced, and extraordinary personalities, which are the goal characteristics of the graduates of St. Petersburg University. The soaring figure of Genius is based on a stylized bronze column, symbolizing the inviolability of knowledge, which serves as the foundation of any achievements. A highly raised torch in one hand is a symbol of knowledge illuminating the path to humanity. A laurel wreath in the other is a preeminence on the path of knowledge. The flying figure personifies the irresistible flight of thought and the genius of mankind.
The inscription on the front says: "Dedicated to the universitarians",
while on the back it explains the origin of the sculpture:
