Description
Masiakasaurus knopfleri is an extinct dinosaur species that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 70 to 66 million years ago. It was a small theropod dinosaur and belonged to a group known as abelisaurids.
Masiakasaurus knopfleri was first discovered in Madagascar and was named after the Malagasy word "masiaka," meaning "vicious" or "cruel," and Mark Knopfler, the lead guitarist of the band Dire Straits, due to his contribution to the music album "One World One Voice," which supported conservation efforts in Madagascar.
This dinosaur was relatively small, measuring about 2 to 3 meters (6.5 to 10 feet) in length. It had a slender body with long hind limbs and shorter forelimbs. Masiakasaurus had a unique set of features that set it apart from other theropods. Its skull had forward-curving teeth in both its upper and lower jaws, giving it a crocodile-like appearance. These teeth were specialized for gripping and piercing prey.
