Description
This elephant riding figure was found in the north of the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, part of a collection sourced from the Pakpak and Toba tribes. Sumatra boasts a rich culture and this stone statue of a seated figure was found in the northern part of the country in the mid-19th century. It is part of the Quai Branley's large collection of indigenous art and cultures from Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas. The museum collection has 450,000 objects, of which 3,500 are on display at any given time, in both permanent and temporary thematic exhibits.
