Planetary Gear Orb - This is my entry into the Sinterit design competition in the Mechanical/Math Art category. Goodluck everyone.May the best design win!!
I came up with this idea in my last year of high school. The students in my physics class were assigned to write an interesting made-up story and relate it to Einstein’s theory of relativity. In my story I talked about a magical orb. It had the ability to change time, bend space and manipulate all matter. Any person who held the orb remained unaffected by its mystical powers.
This orb consists of 8 moving parts. There are 6 planetary gears and 2 main hemispheres (Top & Bottom). The 6 gears rotate around the sun gear which is fixed to the bottom hemisphere and they are held in place with an external ring gear connected to the top hemisphere. I have given the gears a slight tolerance which should allow the gears to move smoothly. I have also added tiny connections to the planetary gears which can easily be broken once the two main hemispheres are rotated in opposite directions. This is a fully assembled print and designed for SLS printing.
The dimensions are 90mm x 90mm x 90mm
I also animated a script so you can see how it will function. Its not the smoothest animation but I tried my best. Check out this link
I hope you like it :)
