Description
This statue, a Roman copy of the 1st century AD, is inspired by the Urania of the group of the nine Muses created by Philiskos of Rhodes in the 2nd century BC.
In the Renaissance, this subject was very populat in the collections of antiquities where they symbolically displayed the virtues of the families owning them. The statue's identification as Urania is the result of the neoclassical restoration that added the stylus and the globe, attributes of the muse of astronomy.
