The Life Counter will of course work just fine without the box though, and is a slim profile so it's likely to fit wherever you keep your cards, or just comfortably in your pocket. :)
The gears hold their position with a satisfying 'click' as you rotate them. The mechanisms for this are printed on the base piece, and are generally stuck right after the print is finished. If you place the gear over the mechanism and start turning though, it will free the moving arm parts and work as intended.
No supports, and any print settings will do great! I recommend adding a color change on the gears to make the numbers more visible, white or black numbers are the best for visiblity.
