A 3D printable robust and durable, modern take on the classical garden bulb fork Extractor, designed to extract onions, potatoes, and other plant bulbs or roots in your garden, flower beds or other locations.
This design features replaceable claws in case of a mishap. It is optimized for a 0.6 mm nozzle and can be easily 3D printed, without any support, on a larger size hobbyist 3D Printer such as the CR-10, the Sidewinder, or other similar printers with a build area of 300 mm X 300 mm (~11.8” X 11.8”).
It can be printed with a variety of materials, including PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA and many other types of printable materials.
PLA works well for this application as long as the parts will not be used, stored or kept in a high temperature environment, exceeding ~55 C (~ 130 F).
PETG and ASA are other excellent choices.
Recommended print settings with a .6 mm nozzle
- Layer Height: .2 mm
- Line width: 0.67 ~ 0.75mm (3 ~ 3.5 mm)
- 4~5 perimeters or shells (3 mm depending on line width)
- 15 bottom layers (3 mm)
- 15 top layers (3 mm)
- Infill 15%~20%, depending on infill type
Recommended print settings with a .4 mm nozzle
Note: A 0.4 mm nozzle requires a sightly larger shell to maintain the same part strength. Therefore we recommend adding one or two additional perimeters as well as one extra top and one extra bottom layer.
- Layer Height: .2 mm
- 8 perimeters or shells (3.6 ~ 4.0 mm)
- 16 bottom layers (3.2 mm)
- 16 top layers (3.2 mm)
- Infill 15%~20%, depending on infill type
Additional items required for assembly
1 X M3-0.5 mm x 12 mm countersunk screw
Assembly Instructions
1- Insert and fully seat the claws in the handle.
2 - Insert the locking key in the handle. Fully seat it to lock the claws in position.
Note: The key should fit snug in the handle and the claws - Not tight!
If it is too tight to seat by hand, or gentle tapping with a tool, do not force it.
Tip: Use a small file to debur the edges of the key and try to insert it again. It may be all that is required for the key to fit properly.
If the key does not fit properly, you may have to re-scale it slightly smaller (0.1 mm ~ 0.2 mm) in your slicer along the X and Z axis to provide additional clearance and re-print it.
Note: When the key is properly sized the claws will not move in the handle, yet when the key is removed, the claws can be replaced as needed.
3- Insert the M3-0.5mm x 12 mm countersunk screw in the handle opposite the locking key, to secure the key from backing out.
4- Tighten the screw just enough, until it is fully seated.
4- DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN!
Key removal to replace a claw
Note: The key is purposely designed to fit in snugly to lock the claws in place.
1 - Remove the M3-05 x 12 mm locking screw.
2 - Insert a longer M3-05 screw (20~30 mm).
3 – Gently tap on the longer screw to dislodge the key.
4 – Remove the longer screw.
5 – Pull out the key from the protruding side
Tip: Small pair of pliers can be used for better leverage.
